Not My Will: A Devotional For Holy Week
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
- Luke 22:42
This verse comes from the Garden of Gethsemane, just hours before Jesus would be arrested and crucified. As He prayed, fully aware of the suffering ahead, He asked if there was another way — but ultimately submitted to the Father’s will. This moment reveals both His humanity and His perfect obedience.
During Holy Week, we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice, and this verse reminds us of the internal battle He endured — not just on the cross, but in His heart beforehand.
This verse challenges us to confront the tension between comfort and calling. Whether you’re facing uncertainty, pressure, or resistance, Jesus models what it means to surrender. In life— we all face “cups” we don’t want to drink. But when we choose obedience over ease, we reflect Christ’s courage and purpose.
Holy Week isn’t just about remembering the cross — it’s about responding to it. Will we trust God’s will when it costs us something?
Father, help me to follow Jesus’ example of surrender. Even when it’s hard, even when I don’t fully understand, give me the courage to say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Shape me into someone who trusts You with both my struggles and my strength. Amen.

Thank you for this Easter message. Yes, Christ gave up everything for us. We put Jesus on the cross. I am so sorry but He has forgiven me. Still praying God will put a good Christian man in my daughters, A.R., life. If you are married thank God every day for your spouse. Treat your spouse the way you want to be treated. Spend as much time with them as possible. I took care of my mom for 20 years and this took huge amounts of time away from my dear sweet wife. I dreamed about when we would be retired and my job of taking care of my mom was over and my wife and I would relax and enjoy life. God took my sweet wife before my mom. It was His will. Now I am so alone. Never take your spouse for granted.

Amen. I am letting go of a relationship that I’ve had for a while and that I’ve wanted for a while as well. But the Lord is asking me to surrender and lay it down at his feet at his cross. So that’s what I will do. I trust him completely. Amen.

It’s hard to surrender. It’s counterintuitive to life. But, when we surrender to God, we are given freedom to live life for Him and not for us. Example, I’ve been CALLED to Seminary but my spouse thinks it will take up too much time AWAY from her. She doesn’t understand it’s not about her, it’s ALL about serving him. I don’t even have the money but he’s called me to follow. What am I to do but follow.
Sincerely,
